BOADICEA: VENDETTA AGAINST ROME

Boudicca, queen of the Iceni of East Anglia, Britain, was not destined to become a warrior. However, after the death of her husband, the Iceni chief, in 60 BC, the Romans publicly beat Boudicca and raped her daughters. She had no choice but to resist. The Celtic queen raised an army and destroyed Camulodunum (Colchester), Londinium (London), and Verulamium (St. Albans). The Roman historian Dio Cassius described her as follows: “Tall, terrifying to behold, and possessing a powerful voice. Fiery red hair fell to her knees, and she wore a golden torc, a multicolored tunic, and a thick cloak fastened with a brooch. She was armed with a long spear and inspired terror in all who saw her.”

The Britons, however, were forced to retaliate in 60 or 61 BC when the Roman general Suetonius confronted them in battle. Boudicca led from her chariot, urging her soldiers to fight or become slaves, but she and her army were defeated. According to Tacitus, Boudicca then took poison to kill herself, although this element of the story has never been proven.
